ABOUT THE GUIDE
In 2016 JHP and MapStudio launched South Africa’s first gourmet guide featuring restaurants that subscribe to standards of excellence. It is sold in all national book retailers, tourist outlets, airports and featuring restaurants and hotels. It is the ideal guide for anyone touring SA, but with appeal for locals too, as a keepsake and recipe book.
AUTHENTICITY AND CREDIBILITY
Months of research has been conducted and will continue, to ensure that only appropriate and deserving establishments are included. Initial visits conducted by professional gourmets are anonymous, followed by an announced visit and review by Jenny in order to meet the chef, experience their cuisine and write about it. The absence of hotel and restaurant advertisers means that all venues are rated on merit alone. There is also no cost for the restaurants/hotels to be included. There is an enormous level of prestige associated with an inclusion.
Each selected restaurant has a write-up that includes a brief description of the restaurant, a map and detailed directions, GPS co-ordinates, a QR code so that readers can link directly to the restaurant’s website, a recipe and photograph of the chef’s signature dish – in addition to being a gourmet guide, it becomes a collector’s recipe book. It will navigate the reader from the major cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban, there will be country and winelands escapes en route, covering gourmet getaways, refined dining and fabulous food.
THE ‘PLATING’ RATING
A panel of local and international professional gourmets anonymously evaluated these establishments, taking into account innovation, consistency and service in addition to a wide spectrum of gourmet and sensory criteria. The top 21 restaurants received one or two plates in a unique ‘plating’ evaluation system in 2016. A one-plate award is for excellent cuisine, a top-quality eating experience. Two plates are awarded for exceptional destination dining – extraordinary cuisine that warrants a special trip. As consistency is such an integral part of performance in the restaurant industry, three plates will only be awarded to some or all of these restaurants for upholding and elevating their standards, in the future.
